I did a creative writing course at Corpus Christi. It was an amazing place to study. My room faced Merton College chapel, which meant that I heard celestial choral music for much of the time that I was there. The library was steeped in ancientness and in the refectory, I had amazing dinner conversations with Joanne Harris, John Carey, Peter Kemp and David Constantine.
But the chapel was magical. I could go in at any time of day and night and sing. It was small for a chapel, tiny compared to the massive Christ Church next door, but its resonances and vibrations were uniquely sympathetic to my voice. I would find any excuse to go in there and sing. It was a particularly good instrument for my upper range.
I set a story in there. This link leads to me reading it at RADA at a book launch.
