A rabbit runs a swimwear shop. A church has a Patriarch and a treasure chest of Greek Orthodox relics but no congregation. Everybody wants to open a gallery. The government has declared war on the middle-class. This is Istanbul in summer, 2013. A series of apparently unrelated scenarios gradually become linked by a web of business and political machinations. The riot police are not the winners.

Linked stories/novel 50,000 words, approx 200 pages

Stefan’s unwilling union with a genetically engineered fish triggers his rise through the System, the bureaucratic quagmire that controls his world. He finds himself compelled to facilitate the congress of increasingly senior officials with the marine anomaly. Nic Krechter finds that he needs to use the fish’s services to deal with his rivals in the System. The fish herself has to cope with the conflicting pulls of her developing feelings for Stefan and her desire for freedom. As the outside world begins to push through the borders of the System, Stefan, Nic and the fish struggle to retain control over their lives.

An allegory that examines how anyone might act when provided with an uncertain power.

Novel: approx 450 pages

You could eat anything in Ghangzhou. After walking around the markets where people offered to sell me toads, pit vipers, flying lizards and loads of things that I didn’t recognise, it was a relief to get back to sanity and order something familiar.
