Lake Eyre (now known by the very cool name of Kati Thanda) flooded for the first time in living memory (at least, my memory) in the mid-1970s. My brother decided that it would be a good idea to put a sailing boat (a moth) onto a desperately unreliable Triumph 2000 and take it up there.
Success, but probably at the expense of the car.
I believe that someone began a Lake Eyre Sailing club in the 1990s.
